This standard applies to release systems that are intentionally operated by the user or another person and used for the sport of kitesurfing.
In the last two decades, the sport of kitesurfing has evolved from a marginal sport to a popular sport practiced by people of different age groups and physiological condition levels.
However, it cannot be ignored that kiteboarding is still considered an "extreme sport" due to the risks related to speed, water and nature and the unforeseen circumstances associated with them. If an emerging situation cannot be controlled by the user, the release system will likely be the component to prevent emergencies, incidents, further injury or death.
This standard was developed in conjunction with the Global Kite Sports Association (GKA) and other stakeholders such as trainers, test houses, universities and other manufacturers. The purpose of this standard is to reduce the risks associated with sports for users and others.
In developing this standard, requirements and test methods that are as similar as possible to those occurring while exercising and existing conditions have been taken into account. Tests to validate the test methods showed that the use of salt water or unsalted water had no effect on the test results. To keep the test method as simple as possible, using unsalted water was deemed more practical for testing. Unlike salt water, sand has been shown to have a significant effect on the function of the components and therefore on the test results.
