ISO 24496 Office Furniture - Office Chairs - Test Methods for Determination of Dimensions

A new office chair measurement method and a new chair measuring device (CMD) have been developed in order to put an end to the use of numerous chair measurement methods and CMDs, sometimes contradictory, used in different countries of the world, with their particular weaknesses, and to facilitate office comparison.

The test methods in this standard are based on the way anthropometric dimensions are measured. For this reason, a theoretical reference sitting posture was adopted to relate office seating dimensions to anthropometric dimensions. However, this posture does not automatically correspond to the ideal or optimum sitting posture.

The reference sitting posture is as follows:

• The sole of the foot placed on the ground;
• The foot forms an angle of approximately 90° with the lower leg;
• The lower leg is approximately vertical;
• The lower part of the leg forms an angle of approximately 90° with the thigh;
• The thigh is almost horizontal;
• The thigh forms an angle of approximately 90° with the trunk;
• Stand upright.

Further information on anthropometric dimensions can be found in ISO 7250-1, ISO 20685 series and ISO 14738. This standard describes measurement methods. It can be used in conjunction with other relevant documents giving dimensional requirements.
