ISO 2758 specifies a method for measuring burst strength of paper subjected to increased hydraulic pressure. It can be applied to paper with burst strength in the range of 70 kPa to 1400 kPa. It is not intended to be used for components (such as fluted media or linerboard) of a combined carton for which the method given in ISO 2759 is more suitable.
For materials with a burst strength equal to or greater than 350 kPa, or 250 kPa for components of joined materials, an alternative method based on similar principles is defined in ISO 2759. All components of solid and corrugated cardboard, regardless of burst strength, are tested according to the ISO 2759 standard.
Due to differences in instrument specifications, tests performed on the same material using the procedures described in ISO 2759 and ISO 2758 may not produce the same results.
In this test method, a test piece placed on an annular elastic diaphragm is rigidly clamped at the periphery but free to protrude with the diaphragm. Hydraulic fluid is pumped at a constant rate and inflates the diaphragm until the test piece ruptures. The burst strength of the test piece is the maximum value of the applied hydraulic pressure.
Burst force is defined as the maximum pressure applied perpendicular to the paper surface or cardboard to tear a paper. Bursting strength is the strength property of the paper and the bursting strength test is applied to determine the behavior of the packaging in processes such as transport, loading and unloading. Bursting strength is one of the main factors determining the quality of packaging. The tear resistance of the paper depends on the strength of the fibers, their length and bond strength.
