To measure the puncture resistance of the sheet, various brands of devices are used, differing only in minor details. The results obtained with these different device brands are similar, but not necessarily the same. Therefore, for comparison purposes, it is important to ensure that the same brand of device is used for all tests.
The pendulum is equipped with a 90° circular arc-shaped arm to which the drilling head is attached. Both the pendulum and the arm shall be strong enough to minimize deformation and Vibration while testing. One of the edges of the base of the pyramid will be parallel to the axis of rotation of the pendulum, and the opposite corner of the base will point towards the axis of rotation.
The axis of symmetry passing through the effective point of the drilling head will be vertical when it is halfway to the horizontal plane along the axis of the pendulum. At the Release Point the pendulum will be in the horizontal Position determined by measuring an angle of 90° inches from the pendulum when the center of gravity is at rest.
The neck of the drilling head shall be fitted with a close-fitting collar designed to displace its seat and keep the opening in the test piece open after the drilling head has passed. The purpose of this is to prevent the corrugated cardboard from springing back on the arm and braking the pendulum, thus changing the test result.
The energy loss due to friction when the collar is forced from its seat must be measurable and must not exceed 0,25 J. This energy loss must be compensated in the reported experimental results.
