A standard test solution is specified, but other solutions may be used by agreement. This standard specifies the simultaneous exposure of six similarly enamelled samples to attack a detergent solution of similar composition for 95 hours or 24 hours at 168°C.
The solution is stirred continuously during the experiment. Then the mass loss is determined. The lower the mass loss, the higher the resistance of the enamel to the hot detergent solution.
The test method described in this International standard is used to determine the resistance of vitreous and porcelain enamels to hot detergent solutions in the neutral and alkaline range used for washing textiles.
Since detergents are subject to constant changes in their composition, a Standard test solution is specified which can be considered a typical composition for commercially available detergents in terms of alkalinity, wetting property and complexing behavior. The pH value and alkalinity of the standard test solution is due to the ratios of sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium carbonate and sodium perborate present; sodium tripolyphosphate acts simultaneously as a complexing agent.
The samples to be used will be prepared in accordance with International standards for the appropriate base metal. Specimens that are not enameled on both sides should only be used for the short test period.
If, after testing, the samples have defects such as pinhole to metal defects, chipped edges, or edge corrosion, the results of these samples should not be used for calculating the arithmetic mean and the corresponding number of new samples should be tested.
