The viscoelastic behavior of polymers is complex and results can be very sensitive to test conditions such as frequency, amplitude of applied force or deformation, test piece geometry and deformation mode, so these conditions must be carefully controlled if comparable results are to be obtained.

An important consequence is that it is essential that the conditions under which the data are produced are suitable for the intended use of the data. This may mean that different types of testing machines can generate test data suitable for different purposes. For example, small dynamic analyzer machines are particularly suitable for material characterization, but may not have sufficient capacity to generate design data or measure product performance.

Test pieces can be molded or cut from molded sheet metal. Molding is preferred for shear and compression test pieces. Metal plates for shear and compression test pieces can be adhered during molding or later with a thin layer of suitable adhesive.

Rubbers containing a significant amount of filler show viscoelastic behavior depending on the strain amplitude of the test. As a general principle, strain amplitudes will be chosen to correspond to strains experienced in service, but in practice there may be limitations due to machine capacity, the desire to work in the linear portion of the stress-strain curve, and heat generation.
