The key performance characteristics of most interest are airflow restriction or differential pressure, dust collection efficiency, dust capacity, and oil handling in oil bath air cleaners. So this test code is about measuring these parameters.
This standard applies to air cleaners used in internal combustion engines and compressors generally used in automotive and industrial applications.
Before the test powder is used, it must be mixed in sufficient quantity to meet the test requirements to ensure that there is no stratification/agglomeration. The test powder should then be allowed to acclimate to a constant mass under applicable test conditions.
Performance tests should be performed on a complete air cleaner assembly or on a single air cleaner element; Tests on a complete air cleaner assembly are preferred. The tests will consist of an airflow restriction/differential pressure test, an efficiency test, and a capacity test. In addition, pressure collapse test will be performed on the air filter element.
Where powder feed rates higher than this are required, more than one injector will be required. It should be noted that the design of the system feeding test powder to the injector can affect this maximum powder feed rate. Therefore, the maximum achievable powder feed rate should be determined prior to the powder feed/injector system used for the tests.
