ISO 5636-4 Paper and Cardboard - Determination of Air Permeability (Mid Range) - Part 4: Sheffield Method

It can be applied to paper and cardboard with air permeability between 0,02 µm/(Pa.s) and 25 µm/(Pa.s) when tested with Sheffield apparatus. Not suitable for rough-surfaced materials that cannot be securely clamped to prevent leakage.

A test piece is clamped between two rubber perforated plates of known dimensions. The absolute air pressure on one side of the test piece is equivalent to atmospheric pressure, and the pressure difference between the two sides of the piece is kept at a small, largely constant value. The air flow rate passing through the test area is determined and the air permeability is calculated.

If the average quality of a lot is to be determined, sampling should comply with ISO 186. If tests are performed on another sample type, it should be ensured that the test pieces taken are representative of the sample taken.

Cut not less than 15 test pieces, each of which is at least 10 mm larger in both dimensions than the diameter of the circular hole of the rubber sheet to be used, and define their two sides, for example side 1 and side 2. The sample should be free of folds, wrinkles, holes, watermarks or imperfections that are not present.
