ISO 703 Conveyor Belts - Transverse Elasticity (Corrugation) Test Method

ISO 703 specifies a test method to determine the transverse elasticity (corrugation) of a conveyor belt, expressed as the F/L ratio. The method is not suitable or valid for light conveyor belts as described in ISO 21183-1.

Many conveyor belts operate in the form of troughs. If a conveyor belt is too rigid transversely, it will not rest on the central idler roller when unloaded. In this case, its balance becomes unstable and it is subject to lateral movements, which can lead to its destruction.

It is possible to allow a section of the conveyor belt to form a trough under its own mass by hanging the section from its edges. However, this does not show what happens when the conveyor belt is not carrying a load.

However, the results obtained from the test method specified in this standard will allow an evaluation as to whether the groove properties of the conveyor belt are suitable for the intended application.

A test piece consisting of a cross-section of a tape of length L is suspended from both ends, with the bearing face uppermost, so that the upper edges of these ends are in the same horizontal plane. Transverse elasticity (corrugation) is determined by measuring the maximum deflection F of the test piece under its own weight. It is expressed as the F/L ratio.
