ISO 7176-28 applies to stair climbing devices for the transport of adults and for the transport of children. This standard does not apply to stair climbing devices intended to be operated by children as users or assistants.
ISO 7176-28 specifies requirements and test methods for electrically powered stair climbing devices. It does not apply to manually operated stair climbing devices.
ISO 7176-28 specifies tests to demonstrate the ability of the stair climbing device to perform safely on stairs with a slope of 35° or higher if declared by the manufacturer. It also includes ergonomics, labeling and disclosure requirements.
The tests specified in this part of ISO 7176 are used to collect comparative information on factors relevant to the safety and performance of a stair-climbing device in climbing mode and climbing mode on stairs or in crawling mode on descents, as well as when driving. These include the definition of suitable operating environments for each stair climbing device and indications of various performance criteria in climbing mode for operations on stairs and driving surfaces.
This part of ISO 7176 specifies tests for the "reference configuration of stair climbing device". Because some stair climbing devices have adjustable components and/or alternative parts, testing in different configurations may be required to determine whether a particular variation complies with this part of ISO 7176.
