ISO 8970 Wooden Structures - Testing of Joints with Mechanical Fasteners

This standard specifies a density-based method for the selection of wood parts used to determine the strength and stiffness properties of joints between structural wood elements made with mechanical fasteners. It is intended to be used in conjunction with a test standard that specifies a test method.

It is assumed that the wood chips are conditioned to the relevant conditions, the wood density is normally distributed and any deviations are reported. This standard only applies to structural timber samples.

The sampling method given aims to ensure that the selected pieces have a density distribution comparable to the timber for which the test result is intended. Once this is done, the results can be used to directly determine the characteristic value of the strength parameter.

Since it is often difficult to obtain a density variation similar to that allowed in a strength class, a correction method is given to obtain a corrected coefficient of variation for the strength parameter. It should be borne in mind that the effect of density on the load-carrying capacity of the joints is in most cases less important than expected, and many other parameters affect this.
