ISO 9073-17 Test Methods for Textiles, Nonwovens, Part 17: Standard Test for Determination of Water Penetration

The water penetration (spray impact) test can be applied to fabrics that are expected to exhibit some degree of water resistance or water repellency.

The results obtained with this method depend on the water repellency of the fibers or the treatment applied to the finished material as well as the construction of the material.

This method measures the resistance of fabrics to water penetration by impact and can therefore be used to estimate the fabric's probable rain penetration resistance. The sample is used as a protective barrier covering the pre-weighed layer of absorbent blotter.

A certain volume of distilled or deionized water is then sprayed onto the sample and the blotter is weighed again. The difference in the two weights is a measure of the amount of water passing through the barrier. The greater the difference, the more water passes through, that is, the less water repellent the fabric is. Therefore, higher numbers indicate lower water resistance.
