IS0 3127 is the reference method for determining the impact strength of pipes by means of a falling mass. However, this part of IS0 9854 may be used for scientific research, material testing or inspection of pipes where it is not possible to measure according to the reference method.

This part of IS0 9854 can be applied to either insulated batches or continuous production of pipe, and testing can be performed at -20°C, 0°C or 23°C depending on pipe material or size.

Specifications for specific materials are given in IS0 9854-2 for the test parameters to be used to determine the pendulum impact strength of pipes, i.e. impact energy, test piece dimensions, shape and spacing of test piece supports, and test piece type.
