TAPPI ANSI T-453 Test for Effect of Dry Heat on Paper and Cardboard Properties

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of TAPPI ANSI T-453 testing. This method specifies the procedure for dry heat treating paper or board and the general procedure for testing heat treated materials. The aim is to make inferences about the aging quality of the paper with the accelerated aging test.

TAPPI ANSI T-453 Test for Effect of Dry Heat on Paper and Cardboard Properties

The method is based on work with printing and writing papers, but can be optionally used on other types of paper and board.

Exposure of paper or cardboard to a hostile environment, such as certain types of radiation, high temperature, or chemical attack, for hours or days, can provide information about:

  • Natural changes that may occur in the material over the years and;
  • Ranking of similar papers for long-term stability.

Hostile environments used include exposure to heat, heat and humidity, visible and ultraviolet radiation, and sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone gas.

Characteristics that can be compared before and after exposure include, but are not limited to:

  • Mechanical properties such as bursting, tensile properties, folding strength and tear resistance;
  • Optical properties such as brightness, yellowness and opacity;
  • Chemical properties such as pH and alkaline solubility.

The importance of this ANSI test is to provide information on dry environments related to packages in the shipping lifecycle. Examples include natural changes in the properties of the paper over a period of time. It is also used to rank similar papers for long-term stability.

Hostile environments used include exposure to high temperatures, humidity, visible ultraviolet radiation. Other media include sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone gas. Properties compared before and after exposure include, but are not limited to, mechanical, optical, and chemical properties.

ANSI test results from higher temperatures under predicted conditions roughly correlate with natural aging. Care should be taken when using dry aging or wet aging on a wide variety of paper types.
