A test sample is fired in a muffle furnace at 900°C. A separate test sample is analyzed for percent moisture. The resulting ash weight and moisture level in the sample are used to calculate the percentage of ash present at 900°C based on the moisture-free sample.
The amount and composition of the ash is a function of whether any one or the other of these materials is present alone or in combination. No qualitative meaning is attached to the term "ash" as used in this test method.
In most cases, the ash content of paper and board will include inorganic residues from pulp, inorganic residues from papermaking chemicals, and intentionally added loading or filling materials. The significance of the ash level determined in such cases will vary depending on the ashing temperature used and the identity of the materials added.
For papers containing only cellulose and calcium carbonate, firing at 525°C will remove the cellulose and moisture but leave the calcium carbonate essentially intact as ash. Firing at 900°C will convert calcium carbonate into calcium oxide. In such cases, these methods can be used together to provide a good estimate of added calcium carbonate levels.
The person using this test method must verify that 525°C is the correct ashing method to use and the significance of the results based on an understanding of the sample ash composition and the desired information.
