TAPPI T-414 Internal Tear Resistance of Paper (Elmendorf Type Method) Test

Using an Elmendorf-type tear tester, the TAPPI T-414 measures the force perpendicular to the paper plane required to tear a large number of solids from a distance after the tear process has begun. It does not measure edge tear resistance. The measured results can be used to calculate the approximate tear strength of a single sheet. Not suitable for single ply tear test.

Caution is advised in interpreting results from poorly bonded sheets, particularly those containing lightly refined long fiber chemical pulps. A low tear rate can produce falsely high results when multiple layers are torn at the same time.

Multiple layers of sample material are torn together at a fixed distance by the pendulum of an Elmendorf-type tear tester. The work done at the rupture is measured by the loss in potential energy of the pendulum. The tool scale is calibrated to show the average force applied when a certain number of plies are torn together.

As the measured tear resistance increases or decreases for different types of paper, it may be so large or small that it falls outside the practical range of the tool. This problem can be overcome by changing the number of floors tested at one time. The tear length should never be changed to change the pendulum capacity.
