TAPPI-T 807 Standard Test for Burst Strength of Paperboard and Lining Board

TAPPI-T 807 Burst strength method describes a procedure for measuring the burst strength of a liner sheet using a disk-shaped diaphragm. Basis weights for this method should be 98 g/m² and higher. Minimum explosion should be 350 kPa (51 psi). This method can also be used to test cardboard.

A sample is sandwiched between two plates with circular openings in their centres. An expandable diaphragm is expanded across the bottom plate through hydraulic pressure until the sample breaks. The maximum hydraulic pressure is recorded when the sample breaks.

The burst strength test of liner (and board) is a composite measure of certain properties of the sheet structure, primarily tensile strength and elongation. In general, burst strength depends on the type, proportion, preparation and quantity of fibers present in the sheet and their composition, internal size and, to some extent, surface treatment.

Although burst strength is an empirical property, this test, along with grammage (basis weight), serves to define some "standard grades" in the trade. Burst strength is related to sidewall puncture of the finished combination panel and has been shown to be important in mixed load LTL shipment types.
