TAPPI-T 810 Standard Test for Burst Strength of Corrugated Board

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of the TAPPI-T 810 test. TAPPI-T 810 Burst strength method describes a procedure for measuring the burst strength of single-wall and double-wall corrugated board in the range of 690 kPa (100 psi) to 4825 kPa (700 psi), using a disc-shaped, molded instrument.

A plate sample is sandwiched between two plates with a circular opening in their center. The bottom plate is fixed; The depth of the top plate is adjustable but remains constant throughout the test. An expandable diaphragm is expanded across the bottom plate through hydraulic pressure until the sample bursts. The maximum hydraulic pressure is recorded when the sample breaks.

The minimum burst strength of corrugated cardboard is a requirement of various carriers and government regulations set for shipping containers. Although burst strength is an empirical property, this test, along with grammage (basis weight), serves to define some “standard grades” in the trade.

The burst strength test of corrugated board is a composite measure of the stress and elongation of certain properties of the board structure, especially the liner board (surface surfaces and non-corrugated inner papers) that form the composite board. In general, burst strength depends on the preparation and quantity of fibers present in the sheet and their formation, internal bonding and, to some extent, surface treatment and bonding process.

Burst strength is a measure of the force required to puncture (rupture) corrugated cardboard. It is often compared to edge crush strength, which is a measure of the compressive force a plate sample can withstand in the vertical or loading direction before collapsing. While both are material properties of corrugated cardboard, they measure different things depending on the papers used and how they are put together. These are not exclusive or contradictory features and cannot be directly related to each other. While both can be used to describe corrugated board, the different measurements highlight the importance of different sheet properties that may be related to the transport environment.

The accuracy of testing double-walled paneling is questionable because it is rarely possible to obtain sufficiently simultaneous detonations of multiple coatings. Some advocate crushing the double-wall panel prior to testing to reduce or eliminate multiple “pops” of the structure. This generally results in higher values than uncrushed wood.
