TAPPI T-821 Test Method for Sticking Pins to Corrugated Board with Selective Release

The pin adhesion test provides a means to determine the nature and strength of the bond formed during the joining process and can be used to detect some manufacturing defects such as poor adhesive penetration, stained adhesion, and cardboard with low internal bond strength.

The test described in this procedure will measure the Z-direction force required to selectively separate the inner or outer surface of the corrugated board. Take care to use the blade cutter when preparing samples or changing blades. The blades are extremely sharp. Use cut resistant gloves when operating the cutter and changing blades.

Place the thrust pins in the center of the plating and grooved media so that when the sample is under load they only touch the cladding to be separated. Then place the support pins between each pressure pin. Finally, complete the assembly of the tester and center it on the rollers of the compaction machine with the designated face down for separation.
