UL 201 UL Standard for Safety Garage Equipment

This standard covers equipment intended for indoor use in an automotive repair facility. This equipment is intended to be installed and used in accordance with the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70.

These requirements include:

• Used in the maintenance and repair of automobiles such as dynamometers, battery testers, roll-up brake lathes, distributor testers, road signals, engine analyzers, exhaust emissions testers, generator-alternator-regulator testers, growers, ignition testers, rectifier diodes. equipment testers, timing lights, fluid changing equipment, tire changers, alignment testers, wheel alignment and balancing equipment and other similar equipment, especially for use in garages and service stations. These devices may be provided as a system of devices, including a console that houses the control and operating equipment for the system.
• Motorized and non-electric tool cabinets with or without work surface. These products are designed to store vehicles in a repair facility or residential area.
• Electrical requirements for equipment and systems used to power or control automotive elevators.

All other equipment covered by this standard is intended to be powered by a power supply not exceeding 600 Vac and may be hardwired or permanently wired.

These requirements do not cover arc welders, automotive battery chargers, electric or pneumatic tools, vacuum cleaners, refrigerant-using equipment, or other equipment used in an automotive service or repair facility, but are covered by individual requirements.

These requirements do not cover portable tool chests or tool boxes intended for manual handling. These requirements do not cover flammable liquid storage cabinets.

These requirements do not cover battery chargers, battery testers, or other equipment intended for servicing electric vehicles or electric vehicle battery packs.
