Rotational rheometers/viscometers are used to measure the viscosity of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. Procedures are used to determine the viscosity of Newtonian fluids or the apparent viscosity of non-Newtonian fluids.

The calculated viscosity of Newtonian fluids must be the same (within experimental error) regardless of shear rate (or rotational speed). Considering the dependence of viscosity on temperature, the temperature of the measured substance should be controlled within ±0.1°.
