NFPA 101 Life Safety Code Standard

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of NFPA 101 standard. It is a widely accepted consensus standard in the United States. It is administered, trademarked, copyrighted, and published by the National Fire Protection Association and, like many NFPA documents, is systematically revised on a three-year cycle.

NFPA 101 Life Safety Code Standard

Despite its name, it is not a standard legal code, has not been published as a legal instrument, and does not have any legal authority per se. However, it has been deliberately drafted in language conforming to mandatory practice to facilitate its adoption into law by authorized persons.

The bulk of the standard deals with "construction, protection and use features necessary to minimize the risk to life from the effects of fire, including smoke, heat and toxic gases produced during a fire". The standard does not address "general fire prevention or building construction features that are normally a function of fire prevention codes and building codes".

Codes produced by NFPA are constantly updated to include new technologies as well as lessons learned from real fire experiences.

Addresses hazards to human life in buildings, public and private vehicles, and other human settlements, but only when permanently anchored to a foundation, attached to a building, or permanently anchored for human habitation. Regardless of the official adoption of the legislation, the life safety code provides a valuable resource for determining liability for accidents, and many codes and related standards are supported by insurance companies.
