Explosion evacuation devices are safety devices consisting of a pressure sensitive membrane fixed to the structure it protects and forming part of the structure, designed to intervene at a predetermined low pressure in the event of an explosion, immediately opening a sufficient ventilation area to allow air evacuation. the maximum pressure attained by the explosion within the enclosure does not exceed its resistance to the designed pressure.
The application and technical characteristics of explosion evacuation devices are outlined for dust explosion protection in EN 14491 and gas explosion protection in prEN 14994. According to this European Standard, the use of ventilation devices in pipelines and in applications other than those described in EN 14491 or prEN 14994 must be carefully evaluated and, where appropriate, verified by testing.
Flameless explosion evacuation devices prevent the spread of flames to the environment. They are used to allow explosion evacuation where flame hazards from the venting process are unacceptable. Flameless explosion evacuation devices are processed in a separate standard.
This European Standard does not cover details of preventing ignition sources from sensing devices or other parts of ventilation devices.
