SATRA TM161 Bennewart Flex Test, Standard Test for Resistance to Growth Cuts During Stretching

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of SATRA TM161 test standard. The purpose of this method is to determine the resistance of a component or material to shear growth during repeated stretching.

It can also be used to evaluate the effect of surface patterns on crack initiation and growth. The method is particularly applicable to the outer soles of shoes (approximately a minimum size 1 UK has 33 Paris Points), but can also be used with some other flexible components.

Method 1 Cut out the growth of the shoe outsole. The flex line of a test outsole is determined during normal wear or use. Three standard cuts are made along the thickness of the outsole parallel to the flex line and at points where the highest tensile stresses are considered. These will be at or near the flex line. The sample is then repeatedly stretched 90° along the stretch line for a fixed number of cycles and measured cut growth.

Method 2 crack initiation and growth testing is performed in the same way as method 1, except that no cuts are made in the test specimen. The number and severity of cracks occurring at regular intervals throughout the test are recorded.

Method 3 cut the growth of the material, a standard cut is made through the full thickness of a rectangular sample of the material. The sample is then repeatedly bent 90° for a fixed number of cycles and cut growth is measured.
