BS 3084 Specification for Zippers

This British Standard specifies performance levels and test methods for the following characteristics of zippers made from interlocking components mounted on textile tapes:

• Strengths of the pulling connection;
• closed-ended;
• Top stopper;
• Open end zipper box;
• reciprocating mechanism;
• Closed zipper laterally when extended;
• Open-ended connection when extended laterally;
• Slide lock and open end fastener single beam slide hold.

Performance levels are also specified for color fastness to wash, dry clean and water, and dimensional stability to wash and dry clean.

This British Standard is applicable to zippers for general use and does not apply to aerospace or other specialist zippers (aerospace zippers are covered by BS 3F 121).

Different types of zippers are defined by the material of the elements (teeth) that make up the zipper chains. They can be metallic, molded plastic or monofilament plastic.

Metallic elements can be produced from plain or profiled wire and are usually clamped to the edge of a beaded woven tape. An alternative approach is to pour metallic elements directly onto such a tape. Similarly, plastic elements can be molded onto a bead woven tape. Such cast or molded elements may have protrusions on which the slider works to reduce wear of the textile band.

Plastic coil fasteners have nylon or polyester monofilaments wound into coils to form interlocking elements. Coils can be attached by sewing on the front face of plain textile tapes. Alternatively, bobbins can be woven or knitted into textile strips as they are made. Monofilament plastic elements can also be of the crimped type that fits on the belt edge.
