Fire Test Methods for CAN/ULC-S107 Roof Coverings

The CAN/ULC-S107 standard, published by the Canadian Standards Council, describes test methods applicable to roofing materials to determine the relative fire performance characteristics of roofing materials when exposed to fire from sources outside of a building on which they are mounted. This standard, when applied for its intended use, also applies to roof coverings intended for installation on flammable or non-combustible decks.

Fire Test Methods for CAN/ULC-S107 Roof Coverings

The test methods described in this standard include:

  • Intermittent flame test
  • Flame spread test
  • burning brand test
  • Flying brand test
  • rain test
  • Weathering test

Intermittent flame tests are applied to roof coverings that are effective against exposure to severe fire, do not ignite easily, provide a very high degree of fire protection to the roof deck, do not shift from position and are not expected to form flying marks.

Flame spread tests are applied to roof coverings that are effective against moderate fire exposure, do not ignite easily, provide moderate fire protection to the roof deck, do not shift from position and are not expected to form flying marks.

The burning mark tests are applied to roof coverings that are effective against light fire exposure, do not ignite easily, provide measurable fire protection to the roof deck, do not shift from position and are not expected to form flying marks.

The above classifications are intended to demonstrate performance during tests for material types and associated exposure times and are of no relevance for suitability for use after exposure to fire.

Roofing materials must also comply with other construction, material properties and performance requirements that apply to certain types, designs, sizes and regulations. Not all such additional requirements are considered within the scope of these requirements for fire tests.

During the tests, the roofing material is installed on a test deck to create a roof assembly. The test platform may be of flammable (plywood or wooden boards) or non-combustible (metal, concrete, plaster) material, depending on the intended installation of the product. Test exposure depends on the classification sought by the manufacturer. Test parameters vary depending on which class is designated for evaluation.

Our organization also provides fire testing services for roof coatings within the scope of CAN/ULC-S107 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
