The foam height is determined visually by the user at regular intervals by means of a container with a measuring scale. This requires great care because the foam surface is not smooth and as a result subjective errors are not eliminated.

Foam height is measured with a light source and a light sensor. The foam refracts the emitted light and therefore shadows the light sensor. The measurement result may be inaccurate due to contamination of the container. The unevenness of the foam height is not recorded.

There is a disadvantage in using these methods to test foam, either that the measurement results are not reproducible or that subjective effects affect the results.
