DIN 68877 Industrial Work Chair

In the “DIN 68877 Industrial work chair” standard developed by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), the dimensions and safety requirements for industrial work chairs are explained and test methods are defined. Essentially, this standard consists of the following subsections:

DIN 68877 Industrial Work Chair

  • DIN 68877-1 Industrial work chair - Part 1: Dimensions, determination of dimensions
  • DIN 68877-2 Industrial work chair - Part 2: Safety requirements and test methods

The DIN 68877-1 standard describes the dimensions for height-adjustable swivel industrial work chairs, as well as the methods for determining the dimensions. This standard is valid for industrial work chairs used in commercial areas. For example, such seats are used in production, assembly, clean rooms, laboratories and areas where electrostatic discharge poses an increased risk. Standing aids, stools or chairs in offices and homes are not covered by this standard. The DIN 68877-2 standard describes safety rules and test methods for height-adjustable and rotating industrial work chairs. This standard is also valid for industrial work chairs in the commercial sector.

Task chairs are the most used furniture in the office, so it is very important that all office chairs pass the relevant testing requirements. An industrial work chair must be able to withstand heavy loads, be robust and comply with minimum ergonomic requirements. Test methods and requirements are generally based on use for 110 hours per day by persons weighing up to 8 kg. The tests consist of applying forces to various parts of the chair that simulate normal functional use as well as misuse that could reasonably be expected to occur. These tests are designed to evaluate properties regardless of material, design or manufacturing processes.

Regarding industrial work chair dimension requirements and tests, in addition to the DIN 68877 standard, the following international standards are also complied with:

  • EN 1335-1 Office furniture - Office work chair - Part 1: Determination of dimensions
  • EN 1335-2 Office furniture - Office work chair - Part 2: Safety requirements
  • ISO 24496 Office furniture - Office chairs - Methods for determining dimensions
