EN 12102-1 Electrically Operated Compressor Air Conditioners, Liquid Cooling Packages, Heat Pumps, Process Coolers and Dehumidifiers, Sound Power Level Determination Test

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 12102-1 standard. This European standard specifies the requirements for determining the sound power level emitted into the surrounding air by air conditioners, heat pumps, liquid chiller packages with electrically driven compressors, according to a standard procedure, when used for space heating or cooling.

This European standard also covers the measurement of the sound power level of condenser air conditioners with evaporative cooling as defined in EN 15218. are made without external water supply and these units will therefore be considered other air conditioners within the scope of the EN 14511 series.

This European standard provides ways to determine the sound power level of air conditioners, liquid cooling packages, heat pumps and dehumidifiers with electrically driven compressors. Some are specially adapted to provide results with low uncertainties, using laboratory-grade acoustic methods and highly controlled operating conditions. These measurements are suitable for documentation, labeling and marking purposes.

The unit must be installed and connected for testing as recommended by the manufacturer in the installation and operating instruction manual. In the case of split or ducted units, care shall be taken to minimize the transmission of structural sound through ducts and piping systems.

The unit must be installed on the floor, either using anti-vibration pads if provided by the manufacturer, or using small individual wooden wedges to level the unit.

Ducts should not emit noise that could distort measurements. In some cases (e.g. discharge or suction noise), the use of standard metal conduit is sufficient to prevent parasitic radiation. However, in the case of measuring the radiated noise of the enclosure for a ducted unit (eg in the reverberation room), the radiation of the duct should be as low as possible to avoid distortion of the sound pressure under measurement. In this case, the ducts can be made of materials that provide good insulation against airborne transmissions and have an acoustically reflective outer layer.

It is allowed to change the shape of the channel, eg. a rectangular outlet followed by a circular channel. In this case, the areas will be the same at the rate of ± 10% and the deformation will be as smooth as possible. This can be helpful because circular channels offer better sound isolation in the low frequency range than rectangular ones.
