EN 1228 Plastic Pipe Systems - Glass Reinforced Thermoset Plastic (GRP) Pipes - Initial Test for Determination of Specific Ring Hardness

This standard covers methods for determining the initial specific ring hardness of glass-reinforced thermoset plastic (GRP) pipes. Two methods are provided and each is equally valid within the specified deviation limits and can be used for any diameter.

A cut length of pipe is loaded to compress the pipe diametrically and the resulting deflection or resulting load is determined. There are two methods that can be used, called A or B, as follows:

Method A: After the load is applied to achieve a relative deflection of 3 ± 0,5%, the load is held constant for a period of time, after which the final deflection is determined;
Method B: In order to obtain the first deflection specified in the relevant standard, after the load is applied, the deflection is kept constant for a certain period of time and the final load to be applied is determined at the end of this period.

The test piece will be a complete ring cut from the pipe to be tested. The length of the test piece shall be as specified in the relevant standard with allowable deviations of ± 5%. The cut ends must be smooth and perpendicular to the pipe axis. Straight lines to serve as reference lines shall be drawn on the inside or outside of the test piece along its length at intervals of 60° around its circumference.
