EN 12504-1 Concrete Testing in Buildings - Test for Core Samples

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 12504-1 test. This standard specifies a method for removing cores from hardened concrete, examining them, preparing them for testing and determining compressive strength. This standard does not provide guidance on the core drilling decision or drilling locations.

EN 12504-1 Concrete Testing in Buildings - Test for Core Samples

This standard does not provide procedures for interpreting core strength results. EN 13791 can be used for the evaluation of in situ compressive strength in structures and precast concrete components.

Cores extracted using a core drill are carefully inspected, prepared by grinding or sealing, and are tested in compression using standard procedures.

EN 12504-1 is a European standard that specifies the procedures for taking, examining and testing concrete cores in structures to determine their compressive strength.

The standard outlines the following steps for obtaining, examining, and testing kernels:

  • Sampling: Cores must be taken in accordance with the relevant standard to represent the concrete used.
  • Sample preparation: The cores are then prepared by cutting them to the required length, typically 1,5 to 2 times their diameter. The ends of the core should be perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and the surface of the core should be smooth and free from irregularities.
  • Examination: Vessels should be inspected for any signs of damage or defects that could affect the accuracy of test results. Damaged or defective cores should be discarded and replaced with new ones.
  • Testing: The cores are then tested for compressive strength using a hydraulic press or similar apparatus. Test results should be reported in accordance with the relevant standard.

EN 12504-1 specifies the minimum number of cores required for testing based on the size of the project and the level of quality control required.

In general, this standard provides for the consistent and controlled receipt, inspection and testing of concrete cores, allowing their compressive strength to be accurately determined and ensuring the quality of concrete used in construction projects.
