EN 12572-3 Artificial Climbing Structures, Part 3: Safety Requirements and Test Methods for Climbing Holds

This European standard is applicable to climbing holds used for natural climber progression, i.e. used on artificial climbing structures (ACS) and rock walls without the use of artificial tools (e.g. ice axes, crampons, hooks, nuts).

Climbing hatches, bolts, screws, etc. It is designed to be mounted on the ACS with Climbing holds contain large volumes or features designed for use without the installation of additional climbing holds. The main anchor points for climbing holds form part of the current layout of the ACS and are considered in EN 12572-1 and EN 12572-2.

The working group is aware that falling parts of climbing hatches that break during use in ACS are a potential hazard to ACS users. Some suitable systems in climbing holds have been developed by manufacturers in response to this problem, but the systems have not been perfected and further development work is required.

The aim is to develop a system that will prevent parts of a 'large' broken grip from snapping and falling out of the ACS, which could cause serious injury to ACS users.
