This European standard specifies a test method for the determination of mechanical dishwashing resistance of household items. The results obtained according to this document are intended to serve the purposes of comparison for dishwashing resistance of different household items and to give an indication of resistance only under the standard conditions of this test.
The dishwasher test method described in this standard is both time consuming and expensive. However, there is no single accelerated and inexpensive test that gives results comparable to the dishwasher test for all utensils made of various materials that are cleaned in dishwashers. The test method described here will be used as a reference method for dishwashing resistance.

Unused items are repeatedly subjected to a standard test cycle in a test dishwasher that simulates regular household dishwashers. A test dishwasher is a machine in which a wash cycle consists of several partial steps: a prewash, a cleaning step using alkaline cleaner, an intermediate rinse step, and a final rinse to which a rinse aid is added. The wash cycle is followed by a drying step.
