This European Standard specifies the equipment and procedure for determining the steady-state water vapor transmission properties for test samples of preformed pipe insulation under specified test conditions. It can be applied to thermal insulation products.
Intended for use in homogeneous materials and products that may have integral coatings or bonded surfaces of some dissimilar materials.
The water vapor transmission rate and permeability values are specific to the thickness of the test sample (ie product) being tested. For homogeneous products, water vapor permeability is a property of the material.
If the pipe insulation is cut from a flat product, the water vapor transmission properties can be obtained from tests on the flat product with similar properties in accordance with EN 12086.
A "dry cup" made from a preformed pipe insulation test sample filled with desiccant is placed in a test atmosphere with controlled temperature and humidity. Due to the difference between the partial pressures of water vapor in the test apparatus and the test atmosphere, water vapor flows through the test sample. Once steady state is reached, periodic weighings of the apparatus are performed to determine the water vapor transmission rate.
