This standard specifies the properties of geosynthetic barriers, including polymeric geosynthetic barriers, clay geosynthetic barriers and bituminous geosynthetic barriers, when used as fluid barriers and separation layer in the construction of tunnels and related underground structures, and the appropriate test methods to determine these properties.
This standard provides for the evaluation and verification of product constancy of performance (AVCP) against this European Standard, including factory production control procedures.
This standard defines features to be considered in relation to the presentation of performance. This standard does not cover applications where the geosynthetic barrier will be in contact with treated water for human consumption.
The main function of geosynthetic barriers used in the construction of tunnels and associated underground structures is to prevent or reduce fluid flow through the structure. Damage during installation is not covered in this standard.
Installing a geosynthetic barrier downstream of a dam is not normally recommended. Special consideration should be given to any geosynthetic barrier placed on the downstream face of a dam. The practices described in this standard do not include such situations.
Weather data (combined effects of wetting cycles, temperature variation and UV light exposure) are required for applications where the GBR-C barrier will be exposed to weathering without adequate protective coating. It should be noted that in all normal cases, GBR-C barriers should be covered with soil or other coating on the same working day or prior to any condition that may cause hydration of the clay component.
All performances related to the features in this standard shall be determined when the manufacturer wishes to declare the relevant performances, unless the standard provides provisions for declaring them without testing.
