EN 13628-1 Test for Determination of Residual Solvents by Flexible Packaging Material and Static Headspace Gas Chromatography

The chemical identities of the residual solvents to be determined by this must be known before starting the analysis.

During the analysis, there may be interference from possible thermal decomposition products. Residues from thermal decomposition products are not covered by this standard. Additional peaks from these products are no longer considered for the evaluation of solvents.

Samples of the flexible packaging material are placed in a hermetically sealed bottle and heated under closely controlled conditions of time and temperature to evaporate solvents into the headspace. The amount of solvent released into the headspace is determined by transferring a portion of the headspace to a gas chromatograph for analysis.

Glass vials with a capacity of 6ml, 8ml, 20ml, 50ml or 100ml depending on the specific requirements of the accessory equipment, for example, the headspace sampler equipped with an inert septum seal and aluminum crimp caps. The septum seal must neither absorb nor release volatile components, be gas-tight during incubation, and allow syringe gas samples to be taken for subsequent analysis.
