This standard is applicable to non-load-bearing vertically or horizontally oriented barriers with closed and open spaces used to provide fire. Cavity barriers are designed to provide fire separation performance and therefore the test method is based on standard room fire exposure in EN 1363-1.
Open gap barrier specimens are set up for testing in one of two ways to simulate slow or sudden exposure during use. This standard does not apply to hollow barriers containing through seals, which must be tested in accordance with EN 1366-3.
Space barriers are provided in buildings to limit the spread of smoke and fire in hidden areas. Gap barriers can be 'closed', eg. in roof cavities, under raised floors, between inner and outer wings of walls as in timber frame structures; or 'open' as used, for example, in ventilated façade systems, roof eaves and rain cladding systems.
The purpose of this test is to measure the ability of a representative sample of gap barrier to resist the spread of fire from one side to the other. A representative sample of a cavity barrier is exposed to a specific heating and pressure regime. The performance of the test sample is monitored based on the criteria in EN 1363-1. The fire resistance of the tested structure is expressed as the time period when appropriate criteria are met.
