This standard specifies a method for measuring steady-state fluid flow through a geosynthetic barrier used to retain fluids in long-term applications.
The test method and the apparatus described allow for accurate measurement of flows up to 10−6 m³/m²/day. In special cases where the test shows that the values obtained for a geosynthetic barrier are below the sensitivity threshold of this test method, the liquid flow value is declared to be less than 10−6 m³/m²/day.
A differential hydraulic pressure is applied between the two sides of a geosynthetic barrier. It is held constant at 100 kPa during testing, the upstream pressure is set at 150 kPa and the downstream pressure at 50 kPa. The flow through the geosynthetic barrier is calculated from the changes in the liquid volume measured on both sides of the geosynthetic barrier.
In the light of laboratory experience, it is recommended to improve the test procedure and review the equipment development of the sensitivity threshold of the test procedure and evaluate the applicability of the test procedure to product permeability at regular intervals, not exceeding 12 months. Other pressure levels may be applied with the agreement of all concerned persons or parties. In this case, it is recommended to describe the applied pressure levels in the test report.
