This method is applicable to geotextiles, geosynthetic barriers and related products. Applies to clay geosynthetic barriers only when tested in dry conditions.

An annular specimen clamped to its edge is subjected to a normal hydraulic stress that gradually increases with a constant rate of overrun until rupture occurs. The main parameters measured during testing are the hydraulic pressure under the sample and the deviation of the sample.

Geotextiles, dry clay geosynthetic barriers and porous products, e.g. In geogrids, a thin, impermeable and deformable membrane (diaphragm) suitable for the sample should be used. If any composite material contains an impermeable layer, there is no need to use a diaphragm in the tests.

The test method outlined in EN 14151 involves subjecting a sample of geosynthetic material to increased hydraulic pressure until it bursts. The pressure at which the material ruptures is recorded and this value represents the bursting strength of the material.
