This standard sets minimum safety requirements and gives appropriate test methods for drinking water equipment for children.

The entire document harmonizes, for the first time, minimum safety requirements and testing methods for water drinking equipment for children. Some of the provisions are taken from other existing national and European standards and for these provisions the technical committee relied on previous verifications.

Use of this standard may involve hazardous materials, operations or equipment. This standard does not purport to address all safety issues associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this document to establish appropriate health and safety practices prior to use and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.

The analytical method specified in EN 71-3 has been applied to drinking equipment in this document. Soluble elements (antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium) are extracted from individual components of drinking equipment within reach of the child. Conditions that simulate contact with stomach acid should be used. Concentrations of soluble elements have been described quantitatively.
