Applies to factory-built units defined in EN 14511-1, excluding single-channel, dual-channel, control cabinet and enclosed control units. It also covers direct-to-water (brine) heat pumps (DX to water) as defined in EN 15879-1. This European standard also covers the hybrid heat pumps defined in this standard.

This European standard gives the temperatures and part load conditions and calculation methods for determining the seasonal energy efficiency SEER and SEERon, the seasonal space cooling energy efficiency ηs,c the seasonal coefficient of performance SCOP, SCOPon and SCOPnet, and the seasonal space heating energy efficiency ηs.

Such calculation methods may be based on calculated or measured values. As far as measured values ​​are concerned, this European standard covers test methods for the determination of capacities, EER and COP values ​​during active mode under partial load conditions. It also covers test methods for electrical power consumption during thermostat off mode, standby mode, off mode, and crankcase heater mode.

Heat pumps, air conditioners and liquid cooling packages can be selected and compared under standard rating conditions. These conditions do not represent the usual operating conditions of the equipment in one season. Better comparison for equipment can be assessed by determining the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and Seasonal Performance Coefficient, which takes into account more representative operating conditions and performance at rated capacities.

Fixed-capacity heat pumps, air conditioners, and liquid cooling packages deal with varying loads by changing the runtime. The efficiency of the system depends on the effectiveness of the controlling thermostats. Variable capacity air conditioners, liquid chiller packages and heat pumps can more closely accommodate varying load recovery system efficiency by continuous or cascade control of the compressor.
