Regarding the railway environment, this set of standards defines the certification and quality requirements for the welder to undertake new construction and repair work. It then provides an important link between the performance requirements defined during design and access to appropriate quality welds during production and ensure the required quality is demonstrated through inspection.
This connection is ensured during design by defining a welding performance class based on the safety and stress factors associated with railway operation. Quality levels of defects are assigned to weld performance classes to provide a specific level of performance intended during design. Based on these welding performance classes, certification levels are determined for the manufacture, inspection and testing and qualifications of the manufacturer's welding personnel.
This standard deals with the welding of steel and aluminum alloys, including castings. The principle of this standard can also be applied to welding other base materials (eg Cu, Mg).
This part of the series provides general recommendations and definitions for welding rolling stock and related components. Except for specific provisions specified in the contract, this standard applies to all assemblies, subassemblies or parts welded by any welding process, whether manual, partially mechanized, fully mechanized or automatic welding as defined in EN ISO 4063.
