This standard specifies requirements and test methods for electrically operated pedestrian access control equipment such as turnstiles, turn lanes and retractable lanes. Such products can be operated electro-mechanically or electro-hydraulically.

They are generally used to allow authorized persons to move from one region to another simultaneously. This standard covers safety in the use of electrically operated pedestrian access control equipment used for normal access as well as escape routes and emergency exits.

This standard addresses all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events associated with electrically operated pedestrian access control equipment when used as intended and under reasonably foreseeable conditions of misuse.

All lifecycle stages of machines, including transportation, assembly, dismantling, decommissioning and scrapping, are evaluated according to this standard.

This standard does not apply to:

  • Electrically operated pedestrian gates according to EN 16005 and EN 16361;
  • External and internal pedestrian doors according to EN 14351-1 and EN 14351-2;
  • Mechanical turnstiles with Electric/Electronic unlocking system;
  • Vertically moving, power-operated pedestrian access control equipment;
  • Electrically operated pedestrian access control equipment used in industrial processes;
  • Electrically operated pedestrian access control equipment for persons with special needs;
  • Platform doors for metro and railway.

Additional national requirements may apply for electrically operated pedestrian access control equipment used in sports arenas and spectator facilities.

This standard does not address any specific requirements regarding radiated noise, as noise emissions from electrically operated pedestrian access control equipment are not considered a relevant hazard. This standard does not apply to electrically operated pedestrian access control equipment manufactured before the date of publication of the standard.

When the term "electrically actuated pedestrian access control equipment" is used throughout the standard, it describes all possible types and varieties of products covered by this standard.
