Test specimens may be subjected to normal compressive loading or a combination of normal compressive loading and shear loading.

Products susceptible to shear failure, ie having a columnar or pointed structure, should be tested by applying both normal and shear loads, all other products can only be tested with normal load.

The geotextile sample is placed on the fixed base of a compaction machine with a top loading plate, a vertical compaction load is applied, and the change in thickness over time is recorded. The vertical compressive load is applied to the sample over a period of 1000 hours for periods of more or less as agreed.
