EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 319 testing. This European standard specifies a method for determining the resistance of particleboard, fiberboard and cement-bonded particleboard to tension perpendicular to the plane of the board ("internal bond").

EN 319 Particleboards and Fiberboards - Test for Determination of Tensile Strength Perpendicular to the Plane of the Board

EN 319 is a European standard that specifies the method for determining the tensile strength perpendicular to the plane of particleboards and fiberboards. This test method is important for assessing the structural performance of slabs in applications where the load is applied perpendicular to the slab plane, such as shear walls or underflooring.

The test involves cutting a test sample from wood, measuring its dimensions, and then subjecting it to a tensile load applied perpendicular to the plane of the board until it breaks. The maximum load that the specimen can withstand before breaking is recorded as the tensile strength perpendicular to the plane of the plate.

The standard specifies that test specimens should be rectangular and have dimensions of 50 mm x 50 mm for particleboard and 50 mm x 100 mm for fiberboard. The thickness of the sample should be between 8 mm and 25 mm, depending on the type of plate tested.

Testing is typically performed using a universal testing machine equipped with a fixture capable of applying a load perpendicular to the plane of the board. The sample is securely clamped to the fixture and the load is applied at a constant rate until it breaks. The maximum load that the sample can withstand is recorded and the tensile strength is calculated by dividing the maximum load by the cross-sectional area of the sample.

The test method is useful for evaluating the structural performance of particleboard and fiberboard under load perpendicular to the plane of the board. The results can be used to determine whether the boards are suitable for use in applications where strength in this direction is important and to compare the performance of different types of boards.
