EN 663 Flexible Floor Coverings - Standard Test Method for Determining Conventional Pattern Depth

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 663 testing. This European standard specifies three methods for determining conventional pattern depth by variation in the appearance of the pattern characteristics of flexible floor coverings, which are classified as follows:

EN 663 Flexible Floor Coverings - Standard Test Method for Determining Conventional Pattern Depth

Group 1: A uniform style in which the ratio of the pattern to the background is not more than 0,01:0,02 in small areas of 1 m² to 4 m² of different bands (in color or embossing);
Group 2: Patterns where this ratio varies significantly, where some areas of 0,01 m² to 0,02 m² may contain only part of the pattern.

The change in appearance due to erosion of a known depth is assessed by at least one of the following observation methods:

Method A: Pattern and background areas in the test area are measured before and after abrasion using a transparent grid (with 5 3 mm squares) or a magnifying glass with a flat face marked with such a grid.
Method B: Areas where the pattern is completely lost after testing are detected via the contour reference lines of a particular area unit.
Method C: The eroded area and the overall decorative pattern are simultaneously observed from eye level.

Suitable for many pattern types, Method A should be used in a 'heavy' pattern area, ie a high value for pattern: background ratio. It may need to be supplemented with Method C.

Suitable for all types of patterns, Method C (alone or in addition to A or B) should be used when the decorative pattern contains one or more elements with relatively small surface areas but highly 'visible'. for this selective fading will create an imbalance in the visual impact of the new material.
