This European standard specifies a system for cladding systems and cladding materials for exterior wood surfaces according to categories of end use, appearance and exposure conditions. It also describes the various components of a multiplex system.
It can be applied to all coating materials and coating systems for the decoration and protection of exterior wood surfaces, including those containing bioprotective components for the protection of coatings and their surfaces (film protection).
Coating materials may contain biologically active ingredients, for example, to protect the liquid coating material during storage (protection in the box) or to protect their interface with wood (eg blue stain protection).
This European standard does not generally apply to wood preservatives. However, wood preservatives can be part of a coating system covered by this standard.
Names used to describe coating materials and coating systems today place little emphasis on the technical, functional, and end-use categories. This makes it difficult to devise a clear and simple terminology that applies to all product types.
This part of EN 927 attempts to address this issue by defining the categories of appearance and end use separately, but makes no assumptions about whether a particular product would be suitable for a particular use by its appearance alone. The aim is to prevent misuse of coating systems through misunderstanding or over-declaration of performance claims.
