The limits are determined by the thermal diffusivity of the test material and therefore the dimensions of the test. Parts; higher thermal conductivities can be measured if larger parts are used. Materials that conduct electricity cannot be measured.
The hot wire method (parallel) is a dynamic measurement procedure based on determining the temperature rise against time at a specific location and at a specific distance from a linear heat source embedded between two test pieces.
Test pieces are heated to a certain temperature in an oven and held at that temperature. Further local heating is provided by a linear electrical conductor (hot wire) embedded in the test piece that carries an electric current of known strength that is constant along the length of the test piece and over time.
A thermocouple is inserted at a certain distance from the hot wire; The thermocouple runs parallel to the cable. The increase in temperature as a function of time, measured from the moment the heating current is turned on, is a measure of the thermal conductivity of the material from which the test pieces are made.
