For ceramic tiles, water absorption is used to classify products. This standard outlines procedures for measuring water absorption and related properties using classical Archimedean techniques. Impregnation of open porosity is achieved only by a vacuum method. Accommodations are provided for large or irregularly shaped ceramic tiles.
Cutting samples will consist of notching and snapping or sawing where nicking and snapping is impossible with conventional tile-stripping equipment (as can happen with highly textured and structured porcelain tiles). In cases where the cut sample is at least 10 cm larger on each cut side, factory cutting can be performed following the sampling criteria described. In the testing facility, cutting should be done no more than four hours before samples are placed in the dryer. Specimens should be kept clean after cutting with no contaminants.
After impregnation of the test samples under vacuum, determine the mass, m³, of each sample while suspended in water, with an accuracy of 0,01% of the mass. Perform the weighing by placing the sample in a wire loop, halter or basket suspended from one arm of the balance. Before actually weighing, balance the balance with the wire loop, halter or basket in place and submerge it to the depth used with the samples in place.
