EN ISO 10629 Raw Optical Glass - Resistance to Attack by Aqueous Alkaline Solutions - Test Method and Classification

This standard covers a method for testing the resistance of raw optical glasses to the action of aqueous alkaline solutions at 50°C and a classification of optical glasses according to the aqueous alkali resistance (alkali resistance) determined by this method. For the alkali resistance calculation, at least two samples must be tested under the same conditions. Place the test cup filled with 2 L test solution in the heating bath, set the stirrer to 15 mm above the bottom of the cup and achieve the temperature of 50.0°C + 0.2°C.

Transfer the cleaned samples, cooled to room temperature in the desiccator, onto the balance using forceps. Weigh and record mass ml of samples weighed at +0.1 mg. Always use two samples of the same glass type for a test in the same test cup.

The cap has a wide neck and is equipped with two hooks at the base for hanging the samples. A stopper of suitable inert material is attached to the neck, which is first immersed in sodium hydroxide solution brought to the boiling point for 60 minutes. This cap should allow a stirrer to enter. If a gasket is required to obtain an adequate seal between the lid and the body of the container, this gasket should be made of a material that remains inert under the test conditions.
